pregnancy scare

on sun at work i was assisting a pt to transfer to a chair when his feet slipped and he slammed into my stomach. instead of us falling to the floor, he jammed me between him and the bed. since his feet kept slipping, he couldn't get back up so he was constantly applying pressure to my abdomen for a few moments. once we finally got him off of me (don't ask how i did it cause it was just me) i put him in the chair and ran over to ob where jen, my sister-in-law, was working all worried and panicked just crying that a pt fell on my stomach. she hooked me up to do a non-stress test and after 20 mins called the dr. i was having uterine irritability, not contractions. the dr wanted me to be observed for 6 hours saying that if the placenta separated or abrupted it could happen gradually not immediately and he wanted to make sure nothing like that happened. they took a urine sample and found traces of hematuria, blood in my urine. he examined my stomach and in the exact locations i was having pain was where my placenta was so he ordered an ultrasound to check the placenta. he performed one at the bedside and thought he noticed some extra fluid so ordered another one to be done in radiology so he and the radiologist could compare. the radiologist also said that there was some extra fluid and they both thought it was a vascular leak, like a blood vessel leaking which means i was bleeding minorly. he called it a minor abrasion in the placenta and said it would heal itslef but he wanted to admit me and start and IV so i would receive fluids. they kept me overnight and kept me hooked up to the non-stress test all night. in the morning i was released but ordered to be on bedrest for 3 days and then have a followup appt on wed. i was also put on amoxicillin, an antibiotic, for small traces of bacteria in my urine. everything showed to be well with the baby and i was fine on wed and actually returned to work today feeling great. i think i was more scared then hurt but am glad everything is ok now and definitely will be more careful at work and will not be transfering patients by myself. and the worst part is, while all this happened, tony was in milwaukee working. once he was able to get back home it was 11pm, 14 hours after it occured. i was so grateful that jen was working that day, otherwise i would have lost it. she kept me calm and explained everything to me, since she is the more experienced ob nurse. everyone says how they would love just to lay on the couch all day and watch tv but for me, it was the worst. it drove me nuts. i feel so bad for the women who are put on bedrest in their 4th month or sooner while pregnant. i wanted to get up and play, clean or just do anything. tony did an excellent job catering to me and watching mady will i was on bedrest and love him so much for taking such good care of us. we hope nothing like this happens again and after working today, everyone i work with was so great helping me and watching out for me and making sure i wasn't doing anything too strenous. i am so lucky!
